- [Scout-O Nov 7-8](https://cnyorienteering.net/scout-o-brief/): A chance for Scouts and other youth groups to practice the skill of navigating in the woods with map and compass. On Saturday (or other days Nov 1-14 by arrangement), take a guided hike led by a club member who will point out how-to’s as you walk. Then try a practice course on your own. - [Sportsmen's Days Sept 27-28](https://cnyorienteering.net/sportsmens-days/): CNYO offers a short course suitable for families and beginners as part of the annual Sportsmen’s Days event at Carpenter’s Brook Fish Hatchery in Eldridge. Experienced orienteers may also enjoy this as a sprint course. Saturday and Sunday, Sept 27 & 28, 2025, 11am-3pm.

For the annual Scout-O event, the orienteering club reserves the entire campground; you do not need to contact the park office. - [Scout-O Maps](https://cnyorienteering.net/scout-o-maps/): Print one copy of each map per person participating. Maps are best printed in full color. The colors provide clues to terrain features. Tip: put your maps in a sheet protector or gallon-size zip-lock bag to keep them dry in the woods. Also print one waiver form, to be signed by all the parents. Trouble printing maps? Tip: put your maps in a sheet protector or gallon-size zip-lock bag to keep them dry in the woods. Practice courses will be available (markers hanging in the woods) from Friday afternoon, Nov 10, through Sunday noon, Nov 19. There are no physical markers at each control location but verifying your position can be done by using the free UsynligO app from your smart-phone’s GPS (they are presently working on a ‘watch’ version). This beautiful Onondaga County park offers scouts, youth groups, and the general public the opportunity to practice map and compass skills amidst scenic waterfalls and verdant woods. It’s a great training venue for scouts in anticipation of our annual Scout-O event at Highland Forest. The course is free and open to the public during regular park hours.
